Roadee, I should have passed.

I loved my old iPhone, as most people that know me will attest. It was a very loved and well used phone. I traded up from a reliable, but lame blackberry 7000whatever to the iPhone. I waited in line for the this phone, just 21 days after I hurt my eye. I spent a lot of time on the couch face down after my injury and the iPhone was a great tool for keeping me occupied during my recovery. So when they announce the 3GS it took me a little time to decided to upgrade (about 4 days). One of the main reasons that I upgraded was the GPS. I dont have a GPS in my car or truck and we dont have a Tom Tom or a Nuvi. The KU are GPSless or at least we were until we both got 3GS’s (?).

When Apple announced the 3Gs, they had Tom Tom demo the up and coming app. I was sold. I rationalized getting the new phone based off how much money I would save NOT buying an stand alone GPS. So I waited, and waited, and waited. There has been a few nav apps available on the App Store. But I passed them up waiting for the Tom Tom app. And I wait. And waited. Then two days ago the Tom Tom app dropped…. for $100. And suddenly my entire rationale for getting new phones was out the window. For $100 I can buy a Tom Tom unit, that comes with a suction cup mount. If I buy the iPhone app I still would have to hold my phone in my hand and like it idiot.  So getting to the point, I’ve started testing GPS app alternatives. Starting with a $1.99 app called Roadee.

I had high hopes for this app. I mean I spent almost 2 dollars on it. And its kind of open source, and I think that’s cool (I live in Portland, so I kind of have to). It uses OpenStreetMap.org maps, so I figured that if it could not give me good directions at least open source way finding could possibly be exciting. I have to admit I got kind of smiley when I first launch it and pulled out of the driveway. I mean it figured out the best way for me to drive and them recalculated the route for me as I decided to go east instead of west (still pulling out of my driveway). However after the 3rd intersection I was ready to throw it out a window. The problem was that it was having to download the map while giving directions. So it was not able to keep up with my driving in normal traffic. I kept missing turns, much to Johanna’s delight. The quote form her tonight, as I tried to incorporate Roadee into out evening of house hunting was: “You alway rely on new technology, and it alway lets you down”.

Story of my life.

I’m going to find a $5 GPS app and try it next. Baby steps.

Done and Done

Well I’m done and I made it out alive. I’m home eating Cold Stone icecream, thanks to our good friend Sharon. We will post all the details later. Onces the drugs wear off. But for now to bed.

Mo is having his last eye surgery Thursday, January 22, 2009. It is exciting and frightening all at the same time. It will be fabulous to have this part of our life over. We started this process on June 14, 2007 so  it has been a long road…six surgeries in a year and a half. However, poor Mo is having to gear up to go through this very painful process (again). This is the first surgery that Co has been a part of the world. I (Jo) am a lot more nervous than I think Mo is about how we are going to handle Co with Mo’s recovery. Mo works from home so he is with Co all the time. I have to figure out how to take care of Mo, take care of Co, take care of the furry family, and do my job. We have had a wonderful support system through it all and we are going to need it more than ever. We truly feel blessed.  My prayer is that this will be a fast recovery and that this will be as low impact as possible. Here we go!

Whoopsie Daisy

It is nearing 4 am. I am awake enjoying a PB&J and a glass of milk. I am up partially because of Co and our love affair with the bathroom at this point in the pregnancy, but I stayed awake because when I got up I was surprised by a mess. Our poor little dog, Daisy, was sick all in the hall (the one that leads to the bathroom). I, of course stepped in it. I had to wake Mark-o up to help me…I couldn’t see anything because I didn’t have on my glasses and I can no longer reach the bottom of my foot. So Mark-o cleaned the hall and my foot. It just makes me laugh, because a few hours ago I was crying and so sad about Mark-o’s recent detachment (and upcoming surgery) and I was spiraling because of the uncertainty of our future and now it doesn’t seem like that big of deal. Apparently life just goes on…our dog will get sick because she eats weird things, our cats will force us to love them, and our baby is on his way. It all seemed so overwhelming yesterday because of the eye, Mark-o’s employment, our taxes, our baby, and whatever else I could think about seemed to all happen at once. Yes, yesterday was hard and tomorrow might be hard too, but it will be just fine. The reality is that our life is very good…we are healthy (minus that damn eye), we are financially stable, we are loved, and I have a large supply of items for PB&J and milk any time I am in the mood…what else do you really need? I guess I just needed our neurotic, sick to her stomach, dog to put it all in perspective. Thanks, Daisy.

Well the eye is been un-bandaged, and I have had my post op visit with Doctor Hwang. My eye looks different, they gave me a synthetic lens, and an air bubble so the front of my eye is super glassy. Jo says that it looks like I have some type of bionic eye. The doctor said that I need to wear dark sunglasses for the next two weeks, so I’m thinking either a pair of Smiths or Oakley’s. Here are a few photo’s of the pre-op live blog, and or the doctor himself.

  • They used the laser on my eye.
  • Doctor Hwang just got a iphone, and was totally down for taking a photo of my eye with his new phone.
